It feels like a year ago that words like “self-isolation,” “social distancing” and “quarantine” entered our day-to-day vocabulary, rather than barely a week.
Those fortunate enough to be able to stay home and practice social distancing to slow the spread of the new coronavirus might eventually find themselves at a loss for fun things to do.
But if you have an internet connection, there is a world of free things you can do in your home. Options include workouts, concerts, books and museum tours. If you want to stay connected to local businesses, Phoenix-area stores and restaurants will deliver to you, many with free or discounted shipping.
Here are online things to do at home while self-quarantining.
Watch free movies
You don’t have to purchase a streaming subscription to watch movies online. The Phoenix Public Library has a selection of films available to watch for those with a library card and an online account. Hits such as “Django Unchained,” “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and “Silver Linings Playbook” are among the titles available.
Watch a play for free
Instagram users can watch a Hampstead Theatre production for free on IGTV. Starting at 3 a.m. Monday, March 23, “I and You” will be available to watch for one week. Starring Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”) and Zach Wyatt, the play centers on two high school students completing a poetry project. Recommended for age 14 and older.
Catch a free concert
No need to wait in a virtual line on Ticketmaster’s website to catch acoustic concerts by today’s biggest pop artists. The World Health Organization and Global Citizen’s “Together, At Home” concert series has featured Chris Martin of Coldplay, John Legend, Niall Horan, Charlie Puth and Common performing on Instagram Live.

Online shopping? Go local
If you’re shopping while self-quarantining, why not support local businesses, many of which are suffering financially from the pandemic?
Some metro Phoenix stores are offering incentives such as flash sales on their social media accounts and discounted gift cards. As of Friday night, Gather was offering free shipping in the continental U.S. Follow your favorite shops’ social media for updates. And with restaurants being forced to close their dining rooms, there are more delivery options available than ever.

Free workouts
Gyms are closed across Phoenix and workout fanatics have been left to improvise with at-home workouts.
Many fitness centers are hosting workouts on their websites, and several don’t require accessories or equipment.
Planet Fitness offers free 20-minute workout classes on its Facebook page at 4 p.m. daily. If you can’t join live, past classes can be found in the videos tab.
